  • Christopher C. Schmidt M.D. is nationally recognized as one of the "Best" Pittsburgh Shoulder Surgeons. He serves as the Director of the Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He specializes in rotator cuff surgery, shoulder replacement surgery, shoulder surgery for instability, and biceps tendon repairs.

  • Dr. Schmidt has published over 150 book chapters and peer-reviewed scientific articles/abstracts on rotator cuff surgery, shoulder replacements, distal biceps re-attachments, stem cells, growth factors, and soft tissue healing. His two most recent peer review book chapters are on rotator cuff tears and shoulder replacement surgery. His work is published in respected orthopedic journals, like The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Arthroscopy, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Journal of Hand Surgery, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, and Orthopedics Clinics of North America.

  • Dr. Schmidt was nominated twice for the Charles S. Neer Award, given by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. As acknowledgment for his research on growth factors, he was awarded the prestigious O’Donoghue Sports Injury Research Award, given by the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. Further, his patients selected him as one of Pennsylvania’s Favorite Physicians and he was elected by his peers as one of Pittsburgh Magazine's "Best Doctors" and a Top Doctor, one of the leading physicians of the world.

  • Dr. Schmidt, as a shoulder surgeon, participates in a number of educational and volunteer governance committees for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He served as the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon's representative on the AAOS Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee for Full Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears. The national guidelines are designed to improve patient care through evidence based medicine. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society and on the editorial board for Operative Techniques in Orthopedics, and currently he is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

  • He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery who specializes in Shoulder and Elbow disorders. Dr. Schmidt further is Director of Shoulder Surgery -CMI and Co-heads the Shoulder and Elbow Laboratory for the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.
