About Dr.Schmidt


Christopher C. Schmidt M.D. is a nationally acclaimed shoulder and elbow surgeon and currently serves as the Director of Shoulder Surgery and Orthopedic Mechanical Engineering Fellowship for Orthopedic Specialist – UPMC / CMI. He strives for outstanding patient centered care.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and completed an orthopedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh and an upper extremity / microsurgery fellowship at The Indiana Shoulder to Hand Center. He has been in the forefront in the treatment of tendon ruptures and arthritic joint conditions.  He was one of the first physicians in Pittsburgh to perform anatomic distal biceps reattachments, all arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, and reverse shoulder replacements.

Dr. Schmidt has published numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed scientific articles in respected orthopedic journals, like The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Arthroscopy, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Journal of Hand Surgery, Hand Clinics, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, and Orthopedics Clinics of N America on total shoulder replacements, rotator cuff tears, distal biceps ruptures, ligament and tendon healing, stem cells, growth factors, fracture care, etc.  For recognition of his work on full thickness rotator cuff tears and the distal biceps ruptures, Dr. Schmidt was nominated twice for the Charles S. Neer Award, given by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES). As acknowledgment for his research on growth factors, he was awarded the prestigious O’Donoghue Sports Injury Research Award, given by the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. Further, his patients selected him as one of Pennsylvania’s Favorite Physicians and he was elected as a Top Doctor, one of the leading physicians of the world.

Dr. Schmidt participates in a number of educational and volunteer governance committees for the AAOS, ASES, and ASSH. He has recently been selectived to serve on AAOS Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee for Full Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears, designed to improve patient care through evidence based medicine.  He has served on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society and on the editorial board for Operative Techniques in Orthopedics, and currently he is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. 

He is board certified fellowship-trained in disorders of the shoulder, elbow, and hand.  His clinical focus is on arthroscopy, joint replacement, tendon and ligament repair, and nerve and fracture care of the upper extremity. Dr. Schmidt’s offices are conveniently located in the North Hills and South Hills of Pittsburgh and Washington, Pennsylvania.
